The paradox of choice

Don't we all want choice? Choice means power. The power to pick the best available option to us:
 

  • We want to be the one to make the choices that affect us. We can't possibly sit back and allow someone else to decide our own future. Us making that choice is the best way to ensure we get the best outcome for ourselves. 
     

  • The more choices we have, the better it is. More choices mean that there is a higher probability we can find something we like from among the choices available. 
     

But are we really better off when we make the choice? Do we feel happier and more satisfied being the one to make the choice? Are our choices better?

And can we really make a choice if there are more options? Can we pick "the best" from all the available options?
